VOLUNTEERS TO HELP OUT WITH COLLECTING WEATHER DATA

By: Porter

Several people have shown up to volunteer for the Dimension Weather Prediction Service to help out with collecting weather data.

According to the agency, they had been asking for volunteers to sign up this previous week, and they got more than enough willing participants to help them out with their assignment. The task itself is not necessarily difficult, but it does require basic understanding of weather stations.

“We have weather stations in every single outdoor dimension in the dream world that are constantly reporting the weather conditions,” Cirrus of the DWPS explains, “These weather stations have several instruments that give us data to help us accurately make forecasts and models based on said data.”

The weather stations themselves are equipped with various instruments, including a digital thermometer, anemometer, barometer, hygrometer, wind vane, rain gauge, and in some cases a siren or seismic sensor. All of these instruments work together to help send data to the DWPS at any time.

“We’re aware that we’re getting this same data back at HQ right now, however, we believe that in order to increase trust with the public, we are allowing the public to see the data up close for themselves,” Cirrus explains, “We hope that if people can see for themselves how these instruments work and report data, it can help them and others understand how the agency makes its forecasts and models.”

Each outdoor dimension has an average temperature for each season; abnormal temperatures are typically under or over five degrees of what the average is. The DWPS is hoping to see data that will determine what the rest of the summer could bring in the dream world.

“We have some hopes that it’ll be a normal summer, but we know we can’t let our guard down,” Cirrus says, “We hope that our volunteers can see upfront how summer in the dream world will end up as well so they don’t think we’re fabricating any of the data.”

The task itself will run for the next two weeks, and Cirrus will be guiding those along the route.

SUMMER DIMENSIONS RETURN AS SOLSTICE ARRIVES

By: Roman

The summer solstice has officially arrived in the Northern Hemisphere in the real world which means that various summer nostalgia filled memories have caused summer dimensions to pop up once again.

Several dozen dimensions attributed to summertime memories make their annual appearance, and many in the dream world have gone to go see them.

“I missed the Cabin dimension so much! It always feels like we’ve been sent off to summer camp when we visit, haha,” a local deer person tells me.

“I missed the Shore,” a local lifeguard tells me, “Nothing like catching that sea breeze while watching the waves roll in, man.”

We’ve compiled a list of some dimensions for our readers to check out:

Shore:  Feel the waves crash along the shoreline in this dimension. We recommend bringing your usual beachwear and accessories, but it’s not too hot. The sun here is setting, but it feels just right to be on the shore admiring it.

Picnic: If you’re feeling hungry and wish to hang out with family or friends, the picnic tables in this dimension are perfect for such a picnic gathering.

Island: An archipelago has formed in the Island dimension for the summer. Travel from island to island, or perhaps catch some waves on a surfboard.

Club: Watch your step in this dimension…the Club has temporarily transformed into a pool so dance competitions are on hold. However, why not show off your swimming moves instead?

Forest: Not to be confused with the Campfire dimension, but this dimension has a much thicker forest cover area and has a river nearby. Visitors are asked to not start wildfires, feed the wildlife, or interact with any strange notes with scribbles on them.

Desert: Even this dimension has been transformed for the summer. It’s daytime now and it appears that a few people have taken advantage of tanning in the abundant sunshine.

Those are just some suggestions for our readers, but the dream world has much more to offer. For the full list, please visit our website or consult your nearest tour guide for more information.

Q/A: Ask Cirrus

Dear Cirrus, why does it feel hotter when it’s humid?
By: Hugh Medd

Hello Hugh! This question always comes up in the summer, and I don’t blame anyone! Indeed it’s annoying when you happen to stumble into an area that’s not only hot temperature wise, but the air is quite sticky! That’s humidity- but why do we feel hotter?

You see, we measure humidity as “relative humidity” which is how much water vapor is in the air at that moment. Relative humidity is shown as a percentage, or just how much is needed for the air itself to be saturated at that temperature. Keep this in mind…

When it’s hot, our bodies sweat in order to cool themselves off. When we sweat, the sweat itself evaporates in the air. Evaporation is a cooling process, hence why our bodies do it when it’s hot. However, when the relative humidity is high, it means that the air is already becoming too saturated to hold any more excess water vapor. Our sweat is mostly made up of water and when it evaporates, it becomes a gas- water vapor. If the air itself is already holding too much water vapor, then the sweat we release can’t properly evaporate and can’t cool our bodies off. This is why it feels hotter when it’s humid outside!

The next you’re out in a hot and humid area, remember that it’s going to feel much hotter than what the temperature actually says. There’s a handy chart called the “heat index” chart that can help you visualize how it actually feels outside on a hot day by comparing temperature and relative humidity. Check it out, you might be surprised!

Dear Cirrus, what are anemometers used for?
By: Venn T.

Hello Venn! Anemometers are used to determine wind speeds of an area. Wind blows the tiny cups around, and the stronger the wind, the faster it spins. The amount of rotations that the anemometer does is calculated to determine just how fast the wind is blowing. While similar to wind waves, these strictly measure wind speeds, while wind vanes point in the direction that the wind is blowing from. I hope this new information didn’t blow you away!

Dear Cirrus, what’s the difference between low and high pressure systems?
By: Psik L. One

Hello Psik! This is another question that is often asked, but it’s quite easy to understand!

Low pressure systems, or cyclones, indicate an area where the air pressure is falling and low. Air pressure is the amount of force that is given off towards air molecules on any surface above it as gravity itself pushes it down. Low pressure systems are notorious for gloomy and bad weather, sometimes severe! Barometers are used to measure air pressure in an area. Keep this in mind: when the pressure is falling and low, bad weather is on the way!

High pressure systems, or anticyclones, are the opposite. These systems have rising and high air pressure and are associated with fair weather. If you find yourself in an anticyclone, you’re going to see sunny skies and light winds.

High pressure systems are a blessing to some with its fair weather, while low pressure systems almost never come alone, and are typically accompanied by fronts, but I think I’ll save that lesson for another time…

Dear Cirrus, what are rain gauges used for?
By: Ray N.

Hello Ray! Rain gauges are very easy to understand, as they measure how much rain has fallen in a certain area over time. They come in different sizes and models, and some have to be dumped daily to ensure accurate measurements as the days go by. I recommend having one if you have a backyard and see how much rain falls when there is rain or storms in the forecast! Just be sure to take note of the measurement and dump it out after it rains so you can gather accurate data the following day. It’s a simple little instrument, but interesting nonetheless!
