NEWS FLASH: The DIA announces that former DIA chief Tsukanai surrendered his chief badge earlier today. He has been placed on administrative leave by DIA Acting Chief and council-member Oak.

CHIEF DETECTIVE TSUKANAI DAIKI FIRED

By: Porter

Breaking news: the Council of the dream world has fired Tsukanai Daiki from the role of chief detective at the DPF’s Detective Investigation Agency.

In a stunning vote, the Council announced that they terminated the position of the office of the chief of the Detective Investigation Agency. In simple terms, they voted to fire Daiki from his role as DIA chief. In a signed public statement, the Council declared it so, but most interestingly, the letter was not signed by every member of the Council.

While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it appears as if the vote to terminate Daiki from his role was narrowly split 4-3; council-members Cornelius, Esfir, Oak, and Zhang seemingly voted in favor of this termination. If true, this means that council-members Shafira, Āniwaniwa, and Tezcacoatl voted against it. This divided vote would mean the Council is highly split over this issue.

This has set off an unprecedented wave of reactions and discussions.

“It was a truly remarkable decision that the Council made, but it’s not looking like it was unanimous,” legal analyst Brevard tells me, “The statement would have had to have been signed by all seven members, yet only four did. It’s a very dividing issue.”

Brevard suggests to me that it’s not surprising the Council voted to fire Daiki.

“DPF chiefs are sworn to follow the rules and to essentially ‘be an arm’ of the Council when they are confirmed,” he explains, “If the Council says that Lucid is bad, the chiefs have to say Lucid is bad, even if they don’t think that. Daiki went against what they were telling him, so naturally, he got fired.”

Ongoing discussions of Council overreach and reform have also been topics of discussion within the past 24 hours.

“The Council has more power than one might think and that may be a bit concerning,” Brevard says, “They don’t have term limits and can override decisions that the director the DPF makes. It’s sparked conversations of reforming the Council, but no one seems too enthusiastic to collectively take action.”

Brevard says that this termination should also be a warning to other chiefs in the DPF.

“The Council hasn’t said it, but this was also a warning to any chief in the DPF to stay in line,” he explains, “Daiki got fired for not wanting to submit to their orders. Should anyone else defy them, they get the boot. It’s a very scary thing to witness.”

There hasn’t been any word yet from DPF Director Ferekides nor any other chief in the DPF. The Tribune has also been unable to get in contact with anyone following this event. This is a breaking and developing story. Stay with the Tribune for the latest.

UNCERTAINTY OVER FUTURE OF DIA

By: Arial

With Tsukanai Daiki’s termination at the Detective Investigation Agency, it’s uncertain what comes next for the agency.

The Council announced that council-member Oak would be preceding over the role of Acting Chief at the DPF. Council-member Oak Viridis is also the council-member who presides over matters of the rural dream world. With no actual chief detective in that office, it’s unknown what’s to come.

The Tribune has gotten anonymous tips from agents within the DIA who are uncertain and worried over who the next chief detective will be. In Daiki’s termination statement, the Council stated that any and all of Daiki’s replacements were nullified, meaning none of them will receive a confirmation hearing to replace the former chief detective. The Council said that they would be looking for a replacement in the meantime.

“Something like this hasn’t happened from what I can recall in my many years of living,” former DPF agent Klaus told me, “Chiefs will retire, pass away, or step down, but forcibly removed is incredibly rare. This really is something, unfortunately, extraordinary.”

Klaus tells me that the Council needs to be swift in finding a replacement.

“These positions can’t be left vacant for too long. Acting chiefs only have so much power and without a proper chief in the office, things may be delayed, backlogged, or end up messy,” he explained, “When former DDCP chief Demi retired, she waited for her replacement, current DDCP chief Ophelia to be sworn in. This ensured the DDCP ran smoothly in the meantime. While that was a swift transition, it’s not known how long the DIA chief office will be vacant.”

The Council has not put out a timeline for when they think a replacement will be found, but they hinted that it would be soon.

“I could float a few names that they could choose as replacements, but some of these names may not be interested in the role and some aren’t even in the DPF- either anymore or haven’t been in it at all,” Klaus said, “I think it’s safe to say that they are going to find and pick someone is who a staunch anti-Lucid figure who is both a good detective and someone who will ultimately reimpose charges on him with no hesitation or defiance, but is there anyone in particular who rings a bell? Perhaps or perhaps not.”

Klaus says the future of the DIA will also fall into the hands of whoever is picked.

“Whoever is picked is going to have to ‘inherit’ a very smooth and clean DIA that hasn’t had any problems when Daiki was chief,” he said, “It will be interesting to see how the DIA changes under this new person, but also worrisome for the employees who may not want change when everything is just fine as is.”

This is a developing story. The Tribune will provide information and details are they are released to the public, so stay tuned.

Q/A: Ask Nate

Dear Nate, how do plants in the dream world make food or oxygen?

By: Synn Teasis

Hi Synn! You’ve probably wondered about how we even have plants in the dream world that are thriving without sunlight in most spots. I mean, plants need sunlight to make the food we eat and the oxygen we breathe, right?

Well, sort of, kind of! You see, plants in the dream world are different than in the real world. No, they aren’t fake- they’re very much real, but while they may make food and oxygen via photosynthesis in the real world, plants down here do the opposite! In a process appropriately called “sciasynthesis,” plants use the darkness instead of the light to produce food and oxygen. Weird, right?

What people in the real world may not know is that darkness can also be used for energy. If sunlight can be used as energy, so can darkness! Dark energy- as scary as it sounds- is actually not scary, but a pretty good and abundant way to get energy in the dream world. A lot of the power grid in the dream world runs on dark energy merely because the dream world is dark in many places and it’s just abundant- not to mention also reusable. Plants, too, use the darkness to convert that energy into food and oxygen. Plants down here are just evolved and adapted to the darkness very well, but it’s weird to think that they do the opposite from the real world!

Of course, if these same plants are exposed to sunlight, then they will undergo photosynthesis producing the same food and oxygen. Plants have evolved to undergo either process in the dream world, so there’s no need to worry about plants dying off and stopping their natural processes. The dream world’s a very strange place that even plants seem to defy logic, but in reality, darkness is just as important as light! Without light, there is no darkness and without darkness, there is no light. Simple, no?

Dear Nate, how do people quickly get from place to place in the District?

By: Zubb Wahy

Hi Zubb! You're probably wondering just how we even get around the District in a fast manner. You could take the bus, take a taxi, or even drive, but that's associated more with closer travel. Sometimes you need to go from point A to point B fast!

The District has its own underground subway system and it's a very complex and large system! The subway system has many tunnels that lead to various stations located in various points underneath enclaves of the District. The trains on these tracks are very fast! They are able to go at high speeds and get people from one enclave to another in no time! Some travel times may be as high as an hour or two, but they are never more than two hours long.

Some question why these trains weren't built like monorails on the surface, but the reasoning lies with the scenery. Architects decided against building a surface monorail as they believed it would clutter the District skyline. If it was kept underground, then all those tracks would be out of sight and out of mind! Plus, underground subways are kind of the thing. If you get it, you get it!

The underground subways are generally safe. Officers of the DPU are also out on constant patrol to make sure everyone is safe. The system itself is also monitored for any problems so you don't have to worry about anything bad happening! People are always on train cars at any time of day, but sometimes you might find yourself in a rather empty setting with very few people. I kind of like these more as sometimes it can get quite tight in there during rush hour!

Many residents of the District prefer to take the underground subway to get to their destinations, but that doesn't mean the surface is empty of life! You'll still see a lot of people walking, taking a taxi, bus or driving on the streets above! I myself prefer to take the subway whenever I have to travel to and from work or to visit other friends when I have time! If you're up for it, I saved you a seat right next to me!
