HEAT WAVE ARRIVES TO DREAM WORLD
By: Porter
Take out those water bottles and stand in the shade: a heat wave has arrived to the dream world.
Various dimensions across the outdoor dream world are experiencing hotter than normal temperatures. The Dimension Weather Prediction Service anticipated this in their forecast and have issued advisories following the heat's arrival.
A "Heat Warning" has been issued for various dimensions- including multiple wards in the District. The heat is being felt for many and travel seems to be mixed. Many residents are heading out to vacation, but many are also staying home to try and beat the heat in a cool place.
The Dimension Power and Energy Company, DPEC, says they have crews working and on the lookout for any problems in the power grid, but they don't expect rolling blackouts.
"The current heat wave isn't affecting the entire dream world, so I don't expect DPEC to announce rolling blackouts considering we're not seeing an excessive amount of energy overflowing the grid," DPEC Chief Lumière says, "However, we have crews actively monitoring for any problems. Don't worry- your power shouldn't be shut off!"
The Dimension Disease Control and Protection is also issuing a warning for anyone out in the heat as it could lead to heat related illnesses. The DDCP says that they could see a spike in such cases soon due to the heat.
"Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious business. Summer can be fun, but you need to know when to cool off," Ophelia at the DDCP says, "Don't know how many times I have to say it, but drink water. Seriously."
Elsewhere, the DWPS and DFPS- the Dimension Forest and Parks Service- have begun their joint data collection volunteer event. The DFPS have stated that they're seeing an increase in visitors to local parks and forests, but the hot weather should be taken into account when visiting these areas.
"Oh yeah, it's hot out there! It's nice to take in the wilderness, but remember to bring water with you!" DFPS forest ranger Kodia tells me, "I'm here volunteering along with the DWPS in their observation event and bringing along water. It's HOT out there y'all."
The DWPS says that they expect weather data to show an above average summer season for most but not all dimensions. They also said they are on the lookout for anything suspicious in the data.
"Last winter, we found strange anomalies in the data and swiftly reported it to the DPF," senior DWPS meteorologist Cirrus tells me, "We might find anomalies in the data again, and if we do, it'll be reported. After all, I think it's strange that summer is hotter than normal this year, but then again, it's summer and it could be nothing."
The DWPS and DFPS will have their joint volunteer event running for the next two weeks or so. In the meantime, they ask the public to be weather weary and to be cautious of the heat.
"Drink water, wear loose clothing, don't be outside for too long, and of course, stay cool," Cirrus says, "We hope we don't run into problems collecting the data, but you're always welcome to come join us on this little adventure!"
For more information on how to volunteer or the latest on the ongoing heat wave, you can visit the DWPS' website or visit your local forecasting office for more information.
DIMENSIONS TO CHECK OUT THIS SUMMER
By: DGTA
Hello Tribune readers! The Dimension Guided Tour Association would like to extend our greetings once more to everyone reading!
As you know, summer has kicked off and it's hot out there! Just because it's hot outside doesn't mean that you should spend it indoors! There are plenty of dimensions to check out this summer and we'll give you our recommendations of which ones to check out!
The Pool: Our first recommendation is the Pool because of course! The Pool can be a refreshing place to take a dip and cool off. Whether you prefer the outdoor or indoor pools, it's still a great dimension to stay fresh!
The Cafe: An indoor dimension, but they've decorated it to look more like an indoor beach! You should stop by and try their lemonade and coconut related drinks. They're pretty good if you need something to hydrate yourself with!
The Shore: Another beautiful dimension with lots of water to swim in! Take a dip, go surfing, play in the sand…what's not to love in this dimension? Take in that beautiful sunset and watch the waves graciously move…
The Campfire: Roasting s'mores, sausages and other goodies over the fire sounds yummy. How about singing songs and telling stories to pass the time? This dimension is definitely relaxing and worth the time to visit!
The Trail: Take the time to visit your local wilderness and head out to the Trail! Please note that you must stay on the marked trails at all times or else you risk getting lost. Should you find the rest area, there are picnic tables and an emergency phone to use if you need to. Nature is beautiful out here!
The Club: Looks like they flooded the club again, but it's a water party of some sort! Splash on the dance floor and cool off here while the DJ spins some aquatic tunes! Go dance like a fish!
There are plenty of more dimensions to check out, but these are the ones we recommend to our readers. Summer's here and there's ways to beat the heat and have fun at the same time. Stay safe and stay cool!
Q/A: Ask Cirrus
Dear Cirrus, why does it feel hotter when it’s humid?
By: Hugh Medd
Hello Hugh! This question always comes up in the summer, and I don’t blame anyone! Indeed it’s annoying when you happen to stumble into an area that’s not only hot temperature wise, but the air is quite sticky! That’s humidity- but why do we feel hotter?
You see, we measure humidity as “relative humidity” which is how much water vapor is in the air at that moment. Relative humidity is shown as a percentage, or just how much is needed for the air itself to be saturated at that temperature. Keep this in mind…
When it’s hot, our bodies sweat in order to cool themselves off. When we sweat, the sweat itself evaporates in the air. Evaporation is a cooling process, hence why our bodies do it when it’s hot. However, when the relative humidity is high, it means that the air is already becoming too saturated to hold any more excess water vapor. Our sweat is mostly made up of water and when it evaporates, it becomes a gas- water vapor. If the air itself is already holding too much water vapor, then the sweat we release can’t properly evaporate and can’t cool our bodies off. This is why it feels hotter when it’s humid outside!
The next you’re out in a hot and humid area, remember that it’s going to feel much hotter than what the temperature actually says. There’s a handy chart called the “heat index” chart that can help you visualize how it actually feels outside on a hot day by comparing temperature and relative humidity. Check it out, you might be surprised!
Dear Cirrus, what’s the difference between a funnel cloud and a tornado?
By: Narr O.
Hello Narr! People seem to always confuse funnel clouds with tornadoes, and there’s a difference! To put it simply, funnel clouds are narrow, spinning columns of air that begin to descend from a cloud. It looks like a tornado, but there's a catch!
Funnel clouds can only be called a tornado if it makes contact with the ground. This contact often involves physically seeing the cloud touch the ground or if the tornado has picked up any sort of debris. So the next time you see a funnel cloud, just be sure it has touched the ground or picked up debris before calling it a tornado. Even so, we also keep track of these! Tornadoes can form along squall lines, cold fronts, drylines, supercells, and even tropical cyclones. We track and monitor all of these and tornadoes are usually seen the most in the spring. Yikes!
Dear Cirrus, what are rain gauges used for?
By: Ray N
Hello Ray! Rain gauges are very easy to understand, as they measure how much rain has fallen in a certain area over time. They come in different sizes and models, and some have to be dumped daily to ensure accurate measurements as the days go by. I recommend having one if you have a backyard and see how much rain falls when there is rain or storms in the forecast! Just be sure to take note of the measurement and dump it out after it rains so you can gather accurate data the following day. It’s a simple little instrument, but interesting nonetheless!
Dear Cirrus, what’s the difference between low and high pressure systems?
By: Psik L. One
Hello Psik! This is another question that is often asked, but it’s quite easy to understand!
Low pressure systems, or cyclones, indicate an area where the air pressure is falling and low. Air pressure is the amount of force that is given off towards air molecules on any surface above it as gravity itself pushes it down. Low pressure systems are notorious for gloomy and bad weather, sometimes severe! Barometers are used to measure air pressure in an area. Keep this in mind: when the pressure is falling and low, bad weather is on the way!
High pressure systems, or anticyclones, are the opposite. These systems have rising and high air pressure and are associated with fair weather. If you find yourself in an anticyclone, you’re going to see sunny skies and light winds.
High pressure systems are a blessing to some with its fair weather, while low pressure systems almost never come alone, and are typically accompanied by fronts, but I think I’ll save that lesson for another time…
